Public Safety Alert Notification
The Harwich Police Department has established an on-line public safety alert broadcast system that extends the concept of community policing by enabling the Harwich Police to broadcast need-to-know information to the community. This system uses the power of the internet to deliver timely and critical public safety information via e-mail, text pager, cell phone e-mail, or PDA (palm pilots). Check your cell phone carriers website for your e-mail address to receive alerts via your cell phone, if you have a nextel your e-mail address is: your cell number@messaging.nextel.com The system can be used to notify the public for many purposes such as wanted persons, press releases, missing persons and child abductions. How it Works When an incident occurs, such as a child abduction, The Harwich Police Department prepares a statement or notice that we want distributed to the public. The message could include a picture, video, or sound file as well as text. This message is then sent to all persons in the community via their computer e-mail, text pager, cell phone or PDA. The system can be a valuable resource for the community. For example, if there is a rash of vandalisms or house breaks in a particular part of town or neighborhood, a notice could be sent out to residents to alert them of the incidents. This not only gives residents information they need to take the necessary precautions but also may potentially locate a witness to help solve the crime. The system can also be used to notify the public about wanted or missing persons so the public can be aware and notify the Police if they are observed. Anyone can be a recipient of this information. Residents (or non-residents) subscribe to this FREE on-line service by registering through the link below. The only personal information asked when registering is a first name and an e-mail address. The subscriber is then asked for which method they want to be notified (standard e-mail, cell phone, pager etc). The subscriber will also be able to limit which alerts they receive from the department (only wanted subjects, only abductions, only press releases, etc, or everything). The subscriber will also be asked which neighborhood they are in and will be given the option of just choosing alerts that pertain to their neighborhood or get them for the whole town.
